That emptiness inside…it can disappear occasionally but then it always seems to return, sometimes playing in the background like a soundtrack. We often go on a long tiresome journey trying ever so much to fill it. We often look for refuge in work, relationships, money, alcohol, sex, drugs etc but that only seems to make the void bigger. What is the answer? Better still, what is the problem?

The Pursuit of Meaning EK Ndanguzi

E.K Ndanguzi's book is not one to be summarized, presented in a synopsis manner. It is a book to be pondered and experienced and re-visited many times. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part he discusses the False Self and The True Self: `The False Self - the Ego: It is your perceived identity. Your ego identity is made up of emotional and mental constructs held by core beliefs. The environment around you, in the way of social interactions, shapes your core beliefs. Your ego includes, your personality, your home, your habits, your favorite movie, your job, your culture etc. It dictates what we like, don't like, will accept and won't accept. The True Self - Consciousness: There is a presence behind the mind that can literally "watch" the mind. When you detach from thought and the mind, you are detaching from the ego. When you pull away the ego, you will then get a glimpse of consciousness - the true self. Your true self or consciousness is your essence, the inner you, your spirit. It is the non-physical you. When you glimpse the true self, ego-fear, vanity, the need to present a persona and the facade disappear, even if it's just for a moment.'

After exploring the differences between these two aspects of our `self' there is a discussion of topics that explain: Ego Strength, Shaping the Ego - Television and Mass Media, The True Self - Consciousness, and Attributes of The True Self.

In Part Two , now prepared with the understanding of the Self, the topic is Happiness vs, Meaning: `The pursuit of happiness seeks to satisfy the ego. Happiness is subjective and achieved through the attainment of something, the satisfying of a want or desire. It is attached to external things, circumstances, people, places etc. Meaning is derived from giving as opposed to receiving - from which one derives happiness. Giving could be in the form taking care of other people, dedication to a cause, loving, raising children, or creative expression. The pursuit of meaning seeks to satisfy the conscious, the spirit - the true self - the source of your greatest passion, creative power, talent and love.' It is inthis section that we explore The Pursuit of Happiness, The Pursuit of Meaning, Obstacles to The True Self and a Meaningful Life, The Midlife Crisis, and Regrets of The Dying.

Ndanguzi's words are gently offered and the encouragement to embrace them is always present. This is a fine quiet time think book that just may change your life! Grady Harp, December 14
